Specialisms
Sporting
Sport is an important part of the school's life, through both the curriculum and the activities programme. We offer a range of team sports and individual physical pursuits, and our teams take part in regular competitive fixtures. The school also offers a newly built climbing wall and high ropes course.
Gifted and Talented Provision
At Box Hill School we emphasise personalised learning so that every student has the maximum benefit from the curriculum. For gifted and talented students, whilst accelerated learning is available, we aim to probe deeper into each subject with specialist exercises, projects, extension work and open-ended questioning in class. We also run clubs which cater for gifted students, hold extra voluntary learning sessions, and take part in inter-school competitions. All staff are continually trained in extending the more able students and our schemes of work incorporate subject-specific strategies for the more able. Box Hill annually identifies and reviews a register of gifted and talented students.
Notable extra curricular activities
Years 7-9 go on expeditions twice each year, to destinations including the New Forest, the Peak District, Dorset and the Brecon Beacons. The school runs regular mountain biking and climbing expeditions during the school holidays to locations including Snowdonia, the Lake District and Scotland. Students may participate in Round Square expeditions in locations such as Peru, South Africa and India. Students also have the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
General
Box Hill School is based around the ideals of pupil responsibility, service to others, outdoor adventure and international understanding. Whilst placing academic work at the heart of the school, we stress the importance of education as an all round preparation for life. We pride ourselves on small classes, good tutoring and a flexible curriculum. All pupils are allocated to a House with a supportive family ethos, as well as a personal tutor to support their academic and pastoral development. Parents can monitor their child’s progress via our ‘Parents in Touch’ website. Numerous activities and opportunities to represent the school are available, and our Round Square membership gives unique opportunities for international exchanges and community based projects in adventurous locations such as Peru, South Africa and India. We recently opened a purpose built Music School, containing a recording studio, recital room and practice and percussion rooms. The school is surrounded by the Surrey countryside, located close to major transportation links and only 40 minutes from central London.
